Flowers and Vine Hiking Stick

I’m actually quite happy with how this turned out.

I had some issues with how the wood burning initially looked, I had paint smudging issues, I had a second round of paint smudging issues when the sealant I use to keep the paint from smudging, unbeknownst to me, made the paint wet – and this smudgeable again, but with some extra sanding and patience I was able to overcome those issues.

This is the second flowers and vine hiking stick I’ve made, but I created more variety within the flowers both in shape and color. It’s made from a piece of sumac wood -one of my favorite woods to work with and very underrated- which stands at 60.5”, or just a half-inch over 5′. The flowers and vine were created with a wood burner and filled in with paint pens. I then applied two coats of spray sealer to protect both the wood and the paint. Finally I gave it a coat of boiled linseed oil for final layer of protection and polished sheen.

Planets of the Solar System Hiking Stick

I’ve been trying to get back into making my staves and hiking sticks – I seem to always make a few, then fall out of it again.

But, I’m back at it once more and here’s another solar system themed stick! It’s got your basic planets plus Pluto and its moon, Charon; I also included Earth’s moon, a radio satellite, Sputnik, and a UFO. It stands at 55.5″ and is made of one of my favorite and underrated woods -sumac- which is lightweight, yet surprisingly sturdy. I used gel pens for the illustrations, a spray sealant, and finally some boiled linseed oil for some extra protection and an added sheen.

Painted Viking Serpent Diamond Willow Staff

I’m tempted to say this staff is cursed. From the beginning nothing went the way I intended it and the final product turned out completely different from what I’d originally envisioned. Something would go wrong and I’d be forced to redo something else, or change the direction to compensate. Overall it still came out looking alright, just not its original intended look. And although I’m happy with the final outcome I’m more relieved that it’s finally done. It took a lot of hours to complete and even more to fine tune it and fix mistakes.

Natural Spiral Knot Walking Cane

Sometimes I find a piece of wood that I try to work as little as possible – usually for wands since I come across small interestingly shaped pieces than larger ones. If memory serves, which it might not, this was cut from the small patch of woods growing (mostly maple) near my house where some sort of vine grew along the small tree creating the nice spiral. I stripped away the bark then sanded it and after deciding to leave it as is applied some boiled linseed oil. It is on the smaller side measuring 50” or 4’2” making more of a cane or walking stick than a staff.

Cthulhu Cult Staff

The Staff of Cthulhu is certainly unique both in terms of the process and final product. Despite standing at 63” tall (a little longer if you measure with the curve) it’s surprisingly lightweight. The smooth, pale wood provided an excellent canvas for the wood-burning to really pop and stand out. However, the curved nature of a staff meant I had to wrap the image I wanted. The difficulty came in trying to navigate where to put what without bumping into something else. It also required texturing and slight shading which I hadn’t done with a wood-burner yet.

But, as you can see, Cthulhu’s hands, claws, wings, and mass off tentacles all fit within the limited space. Beneath the main depiction and hand grip made of black rawhide lace, are smaller cuneiform-like symbols I used to represent the phonetics of “Ph’nglui mglw’ nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn,” as it is in the Lovecraft mythos. It of course translates to “In his house at R’lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming.” After the pyrography was done I sanded it again and gave it several layers of polyurethane for protection and its aesthetics.

If you can’t tell, I have an affinity for ancient Egyptian culture and astronomy choosing to carve out ancient hieroglyphs and star constellations – Orion and the twelve signs of the zodiac. The larger black stones are coated with a water-proof sealant meant to protect the ink and giving the stones a remarkable sheen that came out wonderful! The smaller colored and black stones have no coating since I used a paint-pen which dries quicker and won’t smudge despite handling.
